John e E. YablonovitchPropostos de forma independente, s\u00e3o uma microestrutura artificial formada pelo arranjo peri\u00f3dico de meios com diferentes \u00edndices de refra\u00e7\u00e3o. Cristais fot\u00f4nicos s\u00e3o materiais de bandgap fot\u00f4nico e, da perspectiva da estrutura do material, cristais fot\u00f4nicos s\u00e3o uma classe de cristais projetados e fabricados artificialmente com estruturas diel\u00e9tricas peri\u00f3dicas na escala \u00f3ptica. Semelhante \u00e0 modula\u00e7\u00e3o da fun\u00e7\u00e3o de onda do el\u00e9tron por uma rede semicondutora, materiais de bandgap fot\u00f4nicos s\u00e3o capazes de modular ondas eletromagn\u00e9ticas \u2014 com comprimentos de onda correspondentesQuando ondas eletromagn\u00e9ticas se propagam em materiais de bandgap fot\u00f4nicos, elas s\u00e3o moduladas devido \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de espalhamento de Bragg, e a energia da onda eletromagn\u00e9tica forma cristais fot\u00f4nicos estruturados em banda. H\u00e1 uma banda entre as bandas, ou seja, a banda do f\u00f3ton. F\u00f3tons com energia na banda do f\u00f3ton n\u00e3o podem entrar no cristal. Cristais fot\u00f4nicos e semicondutores t\u00eam muitas similaridades em modelos b\u00e1sicos e ideias de pesquisa e, em princ\u00edpio, as pessoas podem projetar e fabricar cristais fot\u00f4nicos e seus dispositivos para controlar o movimento de f\u00f3tons. O advento dos cristais fot\u00f4nicos, tamb\u00e9m conhecidos como materiais de bandgap de f\u00f3tons, tornou poss\u00edvel o sonho de manipular e controlar f\u00f3tons.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.
